Radiant Story in Skyrim – What is it?

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 19 - 2011

Radiant Story in Skyrim

If your intimately familiar with The Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim predecessor, “Oblivion” or have read much about some of the cool new technical features in Skyrim, than you might have heard of Radiant Story.

In Oblivion game creators and developers created a way to make the NPC’s you interact with more dynamic and less linear – meaning they could react to changes and needs in the environment and in different fashions. For instance, if an NPC is hungry they will act on that hunger by going to purchase food, hunting, or stealing it. If they are tired they might sleep or if they are bored they might read. This is accomplished through artificial intelligence. In Oblivion case – this term was coined Radiant AI.

So what has TESV : Skyrim done differently? Not only have they taken the current Radiant AI system in place and improved it to make the emotions and reactions of NPC’s even more realistic and unique, but they have overhauled the way the entire story of the game evolves based on the way you choose to play your character.

Bethesda has promised more NPC interaction and a more dynamic gameplay experience as a result of the Radiant Story system implementation. Radiant story is designed to follow the player throughout his adventure creating unique instances and quests based on player experiences and actions. An official press release from Bethesda has stated that Radiant Story will generate quests solely as a result of the player’s choices – good or evil.

It sounds as if the main story can only take minor course corrections but Radiant Story is planned to generate enough content for immerse replayability. Game Director and Executive Produce Todd Howard has said:

The other thing it does is give the game a more organic feel than scripting could. NPC’s won’t always be standing there doing the exact same thing at the same time. The fact that your experience and what’s going on in the world around you in your game is a bit different than other people is pretty cool. The conversations you’ll overhear and subsequent quests you’ll be able to get as a result will vary. It makes the world feel much more realistic and alive.

How alive and realistic of a world can we expect? Only Todd Howard and his design team knows. We will have to find out ourselves come 11/11/11.

Skyrim Gameplay : Sneaking

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 16 - 2011

Skyrim StealthPumped for some intense stealth action in Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim???

Your not the only one.

Players everywhere are anticipating the exciting changes and new features brought into Skyrim and how stealth will integrate into game play.

Sneaking has always been a premier appeal for a ton of players. Luckily for you – rumors say that stealth will be getting a huge overhaul in this installment of the Elderscroll series with lots of added sneaking and stealing appeal.

For the most part, if you are used to sneaking in Oblivion – you will get a hang of sneaking in Skyrim pretty quick. The core concepts are the same. What’s different?? While sneaking up on any particular NPC they will go into a sort of “alert” mode which will give you an opportunity to not get caught. If you have a high sneak skill, you will be given additional time to evade the NPC to avoid being caught red handed.

Expect to see some major improvement in sneaking weapons and their mechanics in combat – weapons such as the dagger. Word from Executive Producer Todd Howard is that the dagger has potential to do up to, “ten times the damage”. He also said that mechanic may need to be refined, but that you should feel as if you’re delivering a fatal blow if you are able to get that close with a dagger.

One hit kills, anyone? I fancy.

If you were just getting depressed because I didn’t mention bows – you can put a smile on your face now.

Bows should be getting a dramatic boost in damage over their Oblivion predaccessor – also with potential for one hit kills. Unfortunately however they will be more difficult and time consuming to shoot. Ammunition for these powerhouses will also be much fewer and far between.

Sneaking has always been a huge hit with the rogue / assassin / thief crews.

Expect Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim to deliver.

Skyrim Gameplay – Dragon Shouts

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 16 - 2011

If you’ve been watching and catching up on any of the features or gameplay mechanics of the latest Elder Scrolls installment, you’ve probably at least heard the term, “Dragon Shout”.

A lot of what you have come to know and love about the Elder Scrolls series will be reminiscent in this upcoming installment – Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim. Expect more hack and slash melee skirmishes, epic magic, and stealth (with some new interesting twists). What you don’t know about though is that fabled and majestic sounding ability the Dragon Shout.

The Dragon Shout will bring a whole new dynamic to the game and is entirely separate from a players lineup of spells. Attaining all of the different Dragon Shouts available throughout the game will be a difficult feat. Entirely randomly throughout your adventure you will encounter dragons. There is nothing static about them – sometimes even more than one at a time. Upon slaying said dragons, you will have the opportunity to absorb some of their power. This isn’t as simple as it sounds though – expect some questing involved to make use of the abilities to their full extent.

The concept ties into much of the lore of the Elder Scroll series.  If you’re fresh on your TES history, you would know that in Skyrim there is a mountain called the “Throat of the World” where mortals known as “Dragonborn” go to train with a guild named the Greybeards. In fact, the first main emperor Tiber Septim trained with the Greybeards and was said to be able to make entire villages flee through just the use of his voice.

Will we be able to grow so powerful that we will be able to make villages flee???

I guess we will have to wait to find out.
