Skyrim Story, Quests, Levels, and More

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 20 - 2011
Enough information has leaked from different sources that we were able to put together this quick re-cap of what you can expect from some of the Elder Scrolls V Skyrim content.
The Plot:
• The plot is set some two centuries after the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion story. The story takes place in Skyrim, which is the homeland of the Nords.
• Expect random dragon encounters to heavily play into the storyline as the adventure develops
• A prophecy was told that states your avatar is  to be last slayer of dragons. Mentored by none other than the last remnants of the Blades.
• Civil war consumes Skyrim since the falling of the last king.
• Tons of new creatures to encounter in the wilds. Some of these include giant spiders, yetis, dragons, and more.
• Five enormous cities with 150+ custom created dungeons (not auto-generated).
Questing:
• Expect much more variety than previous TES games. The quests will use the Radiant Story system and will be determined by how the character interacts with his environment or is good or bad. Ex. If you murder a shop keep who was intended to offer you a quest, a relative of his may inherit the store but refuse to give you the quest because of your actions.
• Quests are altered dynamically based on historic actions such as manipulating a town’s economy or killing an important person.
• NPC ‘s will be much more interesting to talk to. 70+ voice actors vs 14 from Oblivion.
Levelling:
• You will no longer choose a class. Every skill can be upgraded and these upgrades will establish your overall level. Levels will increases heath upgrades to magicka or stamina. Perks will also be available to upgrade individual skills.
• You will be able to level past level 50 – but expect difficult gains thereafter.
Skills:
• Total number of skills has been trimmed down to 18.
• The game will allow both specialized players and “multi-classed”.
Combat:
• Huge upgrades over previous TES games. Each hand will be assigned a function from magic, dual wielding, weapon/shield combos and more.
• Combat will be more tactical. Improvements to sneaking and ranged weapons will allow for greater freedom of play.
• Third person view is improved to allow better integration and smoother play while in chase cam mode.
• First person view been made more natural with less heads up display interface to make the screen simpler and less cluttered.

Skyrim is set for release on 11/11/11.

Let the excitement begin!

Elder Scrolls V Skyrim : Mods are in!

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 20 - 2011

Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Creation KitPC Elder Scrolls players rejoice!

It has been confirmed by a community manager at Bethesda that The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Creation engine will most definitely be available for modifcation much like we have seen historically in others installments of TES.

This means players and developers alike will get to create and enjoy content and other game modifications created by other players.

The PC gaming community has seen lots of these kinds of mods created over the years. Such mods have included new AI capacities, multiplayer ability where it previously did not exist, new maps and worlds, in many cases the only limit is the developers.

In Skyrim’s predeccasor Oblivion – a mod was essentially an .esp file that manipulated the way the master file of Oblivion (Oblivion.esm) worked. We may be able to assume that the Skyrim modding kit will work in a similar way. These will be able to add all kinds of neat features and unknown content.

With the incorporation of the Creation engine, let’s hope this opens up some exciting new doors post-release.

Skyrim is currently slated to release on 11/11/11.

Radiant Story in Skyrim – What is it?

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 19 - 2011

Radiant Story in Skyrim

If your intimately familiar with The Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim predecessor, “Oblivion” or have read much about some of the cool new technical features in Skyrim, than you might have heard of Radiant Story.

In Oblivion game creators and developers created a way to make the NPC’s you interact with more dynamic and less linear – meaning they could react to changes and needs in the environment and in different fashions. For instance, if an NPC is hungry they will act on that hunger by going to purchase food, hunting, or stealing it. If they are tired they might sleep or if they are bored they might read. This is accomplished through artificial intelligence. In Oblivion case – this term was coined Radiant AI.

So what has TESV : Skyrim done differently? Not only have they taken the current Radiant AI system in place and improved it to make the emotions and reactions of NPC’s even more realistic and unique, but they have overhauled the way the entire story of the game evolves based on the way you choose to play your character.

Bethesda has promised more NPC interaction and a more dynamic gameplay experience as a result of the Radiant Story system implementation. Radiant story is designed to follow the player throughout his adventure creating unique instances and quests based on player experiences and actions. An official press release from Bethesda has stated that Radiant Story will generate quests solely as a result of the player’s choices – good or evil.

It sounds as if the main story can only take minor course corrections but Radiant Story is planned to generate enough content for immerse replayability. Game Director and Executive Produce Todd Howard has said:

The other thing it does is give the game a more organic feel than scripting could. NPC’s won’t always be standing there doing the exact same thing at the same time. The fact that your experience and what’s going on in the world around you in your game is a bit different than other people is pretty cool. The conversations you’ll overhear and subsequent quests you’ll be able to get as a result will vary. It makes the world feel much more realistic and alive.

How alive and realistic of a world can we expect? Only Todd Howard and his design team knows. We will have to find out ourselves come 11/11/11.

Voice Acting in Skyrim

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 16 - 2011

Max von sydow voice actingIf you were a huge fan of Oblivion – there was probably one thing you weren’t a fan of.

Repetitive dialogue and all of the NPC’s having the same voice.

Fear no more. Bethesda took our cries into considering and hired a whopping 70 voice actors (opposed to 14 in Oblivion) to voice over 47,000 lines to make the world that much more expansive. Now, exploring that new town wont sound like another episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation with our good friend Patrick Stuart.

Notable voice actions in Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim will include the legendary Max von Sydow who will be the voice of Esbern (One of the last remaining Blades – a guild of bodyguards that served the Septim Dynasty emperors)

This news is music to my ears – literally. More than ever I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of TES : V.

Skyrim Gameplay : Sneaking

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 16 - 2011

Skyrim StealthPumped for some intense stealth action in Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim???

Your not the only one.

Players everywhere are anticipating the exciting changes and new features brought into Skyrim and how stealth will integrate into game play.

Sneaking has always been a premier appeal for a ton of players. Luckily for you – rumors say that stealth will be getting a huge overhaul in this installment of the Elderscroll series with lots of added sneaking and stealing appeal.

For the most part, if you are used to sneaking in Oblivion – you will get a hang of sneaking in Skyrim pretty quick. The core concepts are the same. What’s different?? While sneaking up on any particular NPC they will go into a sort of “alert” mode which will give you an opportunity to not get caught. If you have a high sneak skill, you will be given additional time to evade the NPC to avoid being caught red handed.

Expect to see some major improvement in sneaking weapons and their mechanics in combat – weapons such as the dagger. Word from Executive Producer Todd Howard is that the dagger has potential to do up to, “ten times the damage”. He also said that mechanic may need to be refined, but that you should feel as if you’re delivering a fatal blow if you are able to get that close with a dagger.

One hit kills, anyone? I fancy.

If you were just getting depressed because I didn’t mention bows – you can put a smile on your face now.

Bows should be getting a dramatic boost in damage over their Oblivion predaccessor – also with potential for one hit kills. Unfortunately however they will be more difficult and time consuming to shoot. Ammunition for these powerhouses will also be much fewer and far between.

Sneaking has always been a huge hit with the rogue / assassin / thief crews.

Expect Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim to deliver.

Skyrim Gameplay – Dragon Shouts

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 16 - 2011

If you’ve been watching and catching up on any of the features or gameplay mechanics of the latest Elder Scrolls installment, you’ve probably at least heard the term, “Dragon Shout”.

A lot of what you have come to know and love about the Elder Scrolls series will be reminiscent in this upcoming installment – Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim. Expect more hack and slash melee skirmishes, epic magic, and stealth (with some new interesting twists). What you don’t know about though is that fabled and majestic sounding ability the Dragon Shout.

The Dragon Shout will bring a whole new dynamic to the game and is entirely separate from a players lineup of spells. Attaining all of the different Dragon Shouts available throughout the game will be a difficult feat. Entirely randomly throughout your adventure you will encounter dragons. There is nothing static about them – sometimes even more than one at a time. Upon slaying said dragons, you will have the opportunity to absorb some of their power. This isn’t as simple as it sounds though – expect some questing involved to make use of the abilities to their full extent.

The concept ties into much of the lore of the Elder Scroll series.  If you’re fresh on your TES history, you would know that in Skyrim there is a mountain called the “Throat of the World” where mortals known as “Dragonborn” go to train with a guild named the Greybeards. In fact, the first main emperor Tiber Septim trained with the Greybeards and was said to be able to make entire villages flee through just the use of his voice.

Will we be able to grow so powerful that we will be able to make villages flee???

I guess we will have to wait to find out.

My thoughts : Graphics look stunning. Gameplay looks immersive. I’m curious to see what these dynamic dragon battles are really like. I hope they diversified the voice acting for Elder Scrolls V – I can honestly say that was my biggest complaint about the previous installment.

Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim @ E3

Posted by Elderscroll Admin on June - 14 - 2011

Elder Scrolls V New Screenshot OrcFans like myself have long awaited details about our new baby - Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim.

Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim showed up at E3 this year showing off lots of the wow factor and gameplay in the new trailer and here is what you can expect:

The most intricate and tantalizing eye candy you’ve ever seen.

Bethesda created an entirely new graphics engine called the Creation Engine which will make the world of Skyrim pop out like your actually living and breathing in it. The environment will immerse you featuring beautiful mountains and terrain, plant life, player and monster models, exquisite lighting and shadowing, and more. Words really can’t describe how beautiful this game really is.

What we know so far is that there are seven explorable parts of the game each with their own unique climate and ambiance. From the very beginning of the game, Bethesda has taken a non-linear approach to the world. Go where you want to go. The story won’t force you on a path – you will create your own as we’ve seen in other Elder Scrolls series. Careful where you tread though – Creatures lurk wherever you may go.

Rumors state we can expect 300+ game play hours from Elder Scrolls V. Expect lots of side quest and unique NPC interaction as well as rumors that there are infinite dynamic dragons to encounter throughout the game. Expect everything you’ve seen before and a whole lot more – we expect nothing less from Bethesda.

NPC’s can interact with the environment. We’ve heard they can mine and use trade skills and their merchant inventory will reflect things craftable from the resources they collect or cannot collect. Expect extremely dynamic gameplay – and to never be able to finish the game the same way twice.

Skyrim will hit the shelves November 11, 2011, on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Pre-Order it here today and have your copy ready!
