If you often visit the official Elder Scrolls Forums, you’ll see a hot topic of conversation..
“Will there be an Elder Scrolls MMO???”
That’s a resounding NO according to Bethesda boss Todd Howard.
The enormously detailed worlds, extensive history and well crafted race choices would seem a definite money maker and also an exciting and immerse multi-player experience. In fact, you’d almost think that Bethesda would see this as a giant pile of gold waiting to be “clicked” on…
Unfortunately that isn’t the plan and Todd Howard has openly rejected the ideas of there ever being an online game set in the world of Tamriel. In a recent interview he strongly noted:
“I’m not really an MMO guy. I respect them, I look at them, but I don’t play them. It feels more real to me when I’m the hero and it’s crafted for that. A community aspect to it, I recognise a lot of people would want that in a game like this, but it changes the flavour for me.”
Personally, I think it’s foolish not to at least consider the idea. I’ve enjoyed a lot of quality MMO’s over the years and there isn’t anything more prolific then a wall made and well balanced MMORPG. Not that it wouldn’t spark the same debate every other MMORPG has – is it better than World of Warcraft? Who knows what Todd Howard is thinking.
How about you? Do you love your MMO’s as much as your single player experience? Are you sad or happy to hear the news that there will never be a multiplayer Elder Scrolls experience?

im so glad there not… I dont really like MMOs.. I have plade WOW for like a monthe and I loved Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic It was my favorite game I would play it over and over agian utell the disc was ruind and actually Im thinking about getting anouther… well there makeing an MMO of that now I have seen gameplay and I can tell you it ruind that game for me gameplay and graphics are terrible.. they make an MMO of TES and Im done with it.
I’m pretty sad that we wont have the opportunity to play with friends online. it would have been a new experience since this game is already so cool in single player.
I’m soooo insanely happy they won’t make an Elderscrolls mmo! If they went on to make mmo’s, there wouldn’t be many single player fantasy games worth playing. It just proves Bethesda don’t let themselves get temptated by money over making actual quality games. I’ve tried games such as World of Warcraft, but other players ruined my experience.
I’d hoped skyrim would have a multiplayer feature since I heard it was announced. Not necessarily MMO, just any form of Co-op. Though given the environment and extensive story I can easily understand why the want to keep the game a single player one exists. You can’t be “the hero” with everyother player on the same quest defeating the same “ultimate evil” which inevitably return day after day leaving no finality in your story. So to avoid the endless grind against a story with no end, I will take a solo run in tamriel over an MMO any day.
That’s really sad to hear… I’ve played all the Elder Scrolls and am so eager to play Skyrim I can’t wait for it’s release. But I was a fan of World of Warcraft for some time and enjoyed it a lot. I have also played many other mmo’s and think they are a great idea. I hear where Todd is coming from and see his point but an Elder Scrolls made into a MMO would be fantastic. I would definitely play it and love it no doubt. Massive fan of the Elder Scrolls’ games and Bethesda ‘s work and hope to see more…
Even if Elder Scrolls doesn’t go online… An expansion for Skyrim that allows Co-op in any form would definitely make it one of the best games of all time. It would just bring friends who love the game together to play in the same world of Skyrim cooperatively. Hope be great.
I am supremely delighted that there will not be an MMO. The best part of Elder Scrolls is that I can play during deployments where there is no internet and escape into my own world and get away from other people for a little while. Oblivion was my escapist tool to unwind during my last deployment and the thought of playing Skyrim during the next deployment makes me feel better already.
I agree with the notion, MMO’s are not eternal – most have a very short lifespan. This is usually due to the fleeting wants of those who play them – Bestheda spends years making excellent single player RPGs, its a whole different industry, and a whole different experience. Easy question – How much time do u spend reveling at the detail of your inventory or even the landscaping when playing an MMORPG… I can honestly say “close to none” lol.
For the love of all things holy, never make it into an mmo. I’d never buy an Elder Scrolls game again. The second you start concentrating on that, the rest of the game doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
Elder Scrolls games are the best single player games on the market, let them remain that!
maybe a co-op and local co-op, for 4 players maximum. MMO really put in down the quality for huge quests, details and more background history.
and WoW? a big sucess yes, but i hate the cartoon visuals! i hate stupid giant armors, and so colorful!
Yeah, skyrim is going to be my last elders scroll game.
Single player games get old too fast, Im only buying Skyrim because im deployed and i have no internet for a MMORPG
I played the hell out of Oblivion, Fallout 3, and by the time i got to Fallout NV. even on hard core mode.. didn’t last very long. If elders scrolls wants to stay alive.. make an MMORPG. That way, It wont ever end.
Don’t play WoW. but they have the bets idea ever. Make a cheap to play game and just keep adding Expansions that are ‘new games’
Elders scrolls Is going to die fast if they don’t keep up with MMORPGs.
I certainly don’t want an Elder Scrolls MMO, I’m not big on MMOs. What I would like to see is the option for limited co-op multiplayer. The ability to play as a party with like 2 or 3 friends would be awesome. MMOs always devolve into crappy grind-fests infested by trolls and PKs, but that doesn’t mean all multiplayer options are a bad thing.
I have to agree with Tod on this one. The Elder Scrolls series is not meant to be an MMO. To make it one takes away the plot of the game. It wouldn’t make any sense to have multiple players at the same time on the same world. Besides this is the fifth instalment and it hasn’t been an MMO before and it seems to be doing very well without being one. So why should Bethesda change it now? Keep doing what your doing Bethesda can’t wait till 11/11/11.
I agree with limited co-op. It would be so much fun with the ability to party or fight with a few friends, and not a limited npc that can’t jump over a rock to keep pace. However I think an all our MMORPG would severely dumb down and ruin the game.
Amazing job Bethesda keep up the good work you do not change the way you are Elder Scrolls should always be who they always have been
